Hubert Dean Shurtz

	Hubert Dean Shurtz, 77, died at 7:55 a.m. Tuesday, September 12, 2000 at Evangeline of Ormond Nursing Home in Destrehan, Louisiana.  He was a native of Pinckneyville and a 52-year resident of Destrehan and had retired from Shell Oil Company with 30 years of service.
	Visitation was at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, Destrehan, La. from 10 a.m. until services at 12 noon on Friday, September 15.  Interment was at St. Charles Borromeo Mausoleum.
	He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Anna Lee Brogdon Shurtz, of Destrehan; two sons and daughters-in-law, Stephen and Frances Shurtz of BAton Rouge, La. and Mark and Annette Shurtz of Pumpkin Center, La.; a daughter and son-in-law, Sally and Marc Wellman of Prairieville, La.; three grandsons, Andrew Shurtz, Trevor Shurtz and Damian Wellman; a granddaughter, Charlotte Wellman; a brother Frenche Shurtz of Zephyrhills, Fla. (formerly of Sparta) and a sister, Pauline Giacomo of Herrin (formerly of Pinckneyville).  He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Minnie Shurtz of Pinckneyville; an infant sister, Davie Harriet Shurtz and an infant grandson, Jackson Wellman.
	He was a member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, Men of Manresa, McElroy Hunting Club, LaBranche Duck Club, RVP Hunting Club, NRA, Ducks Unlimited, VFW and the American Legion.  He served for many years on the St. Charles Parish Coastal Zone Advisory Committee.
	He was a graduate of Pinckneyville Community High School and Louisiana State University, where he earned B.S. and M.S. degrees in education and lettered in football.  He played professional football with the Pittsburgh Steelers.  he taught and coached at Destrehan High School. He was a WWII veteran and a Lieutenant Colonel, U.S. Army Reserves (Ret.).
	Mass offerings or contributions to the Alzheimers Association of Greater New Orleans, 938 Calhoun St., New Orleans, La. 70118, may be made in lieu of flowers.
